Line Islands, Kiribati
On Kiritimati Island, Republic of Kiribati, JWP are supporting Corals 4 Conservation in the rehabilitation of the nearshore coral reefs after the 2015 coral bleaching event, where the Island lost over 90% of its nearshore living coral. The project has worked with local government officials and communities to establish a coral nursery, to help increase the reproduction of bleaching resistant coral species and speed up natural reef building processes. Through these humble efforts, the Line Islands has become a leading edge in the battle against permanent damage to one of the planet’s main life support systems. Additional resources and partnerships continue to be sought in order to support this vital work.
JWP is also working with Corals 4 Conservation in the organisation of workshops and facilitation meetings on the island to support local communities of Kiribati in the introduction of alternative livelihoods to help adapt and offer resilience to future environmental changes caused by climate change. These workshops have included the training of households in the harvesting and production of naturally occurring food sources, seaweed farming and seaweed products, poultry raising and in local plant-based poultry feed.
Every pound donated will go directly towards the upkeep and expansion of the coral nursery and future community adaptation projects.
